The Best Educational Wordle-Type Games

Here are some more fabulous wordle-type games that build great skills.

We’ll look at games in 4 categories:

  1. English

  2. Math

  3. Biology

  4. Geography

If you’d like to get your child involved in a game like this, we recommend doing it together or taking on each other in competition each day! Daily habits like these can form powerful skills and be great bonding moments.

English

SpellCheck.xyz — It’s bold to start a games list with what is essentially a spelling test, but it’s actually kind of fun. Start off by just trying to master the easy words, then work your way up. Even when you have never heard the word before you’ll develop an understanding of spelling patterns and be able to guess a surprising number of words!

Math

Nerdle — This game is very similar to Wordle, but instead of forming a word you have to form an equation. This one is a student favourite.

Biology

Metazooa — In Metazooa you try to guess a certain animal by using common ancestors of animal species to learn more about the mystery species. The limited number of species available is frustrating at times when you want to guess something specific, but it keeps guessing the correct species pretty achievable.

Metaflora — In Metaflora you have to guess a certain plant species by using the shared taxonomic groups of your previous guesses and the answer to narrow down what plant it could be. This one is really hard, don’t be afraid to use the hints!

Geography

Worldle — Starting with the silhouette of a country’s borders, you guess which country is depicted. Then, if you are incorrect, the game tells you how far and in what direction the correct country is. Keep guessing as you get closer and closer!

Globle — Looking at a 3D globe, guess countries and discover the distance from their border to the mystery country. Narrow in on the answer as you go!

Bonus

Semantle — This game is hard and not all that useful, but is really satisfying when you win. Semantle was created using the same word-to-vector semantic analysis that allows large language models like ChatGPT to operate and it’s fascinating to get a peek behind the scenes of AI in this way. In this game you must guess the secret word based on how similar the meaning of your previous guesses is to that word. It might take you all day.

Custom Wordle — If nothing beats wordle itself, try making your own custom wordles (not limited to 5 letter words) and send them to your friends and loved ones for a fun challenge.
