The Future Tutor Story
The Start
The Future Tutor story starts in 2012, when Breanna (our Founder-to-be) was in year 8. Her math teacher knew that she was well-suited to teaching and that she had some volunteering hours to fill for her Duke of Edinburgh award. Just like that, Breanna began teaching for free. Word started to get out that Breanna was a good tutor, and soon several of her teachers were sending students to her for extra help. She left school with excellent marks and was excited to start her tutoring career in earnest.
1.
Frustration
Having lost her network of students from home by moving to Sydney, Breanna turned to other tutoring companies. She was disappointed by what she found. Impersonal curriculums that don’t address the students needs effectively; unimpassioned tutors unable to form real connection to the students due to turnover; and profit-driven structures that underpaid tutors and undervalued their capabilities. Breanna returned to freelancing, but there was still something missing.
2.
Inspiration
After 5 more years of freelancing, Breanna had more students asking for help than she had time to teach. Breanna wanted to create a network of tutors who could teach each other and rely on each other for support.
Breanna also wanted to be a better tutor. She knew that splitting her attention between teaching, admin and advertising meant that she wasn’t as effective in each lesson as she could be. She wanted better for her students so they they wouldn’t be left on their own when she was sick or away.
The more tutors can support each other, the more we can support our students.
3.
Foundation
Future Tutor was founded in 2022 after Breanna finished her degrees at the University of Sydney.
We’ve brought on only the best tutors around, and have created systems to empower them to do the best teaching possible.
Our students are protected by strict Child Safety regulations, and are sheltered from many of the unreliability problems that unincorporated tutors face.
At its core, Future Tutor is about doing things with the benefit of students and tutors as the priority - not profit for the company. That’s why Future Tutor pays more than 70% of session fees straight to the tutor. The rest goes towards funding our scholarship, training our tutors, and paying our support staff.
